A cornice is a decorative moulding that is installed between the ceiling and the top of a wall. The cornice usually runs for several inches along the wall and across the ceiling. Victorian properties featured cornices in the majority of their rooms. A room with elaborate cornices would have a high status, for example a reception room for entertaining guests would have fancy cornices and elaborate ceiling roses. Designs varied considerably between rooms and lavish detailing would be saved for the rooms which would be frequently on shown leaving say a bedrooms with more subdued and less fancy plaster mouldings.
